Wow! That Earl looks fantastic. Crisp lines and details. the cross-guard has much more character than I remember. Very nice. Looks great in red.

It has an antiqued hilt with light brown leather over dark.

Your hilt antiqued/overwrap combo looks great IMO. Nice choice of colors.

Congratulations Happy

Nah, I just think I oversharpened the photo a bit in postprocess. I guess it's a regular Earl, it even has some smaller imperfections, but you have to have some kind of professional disease to notice them (I make stainless steel kitchen and pub equipment, and I'm used to looking for small blemishes and imperfections in grinding and polishing, my friends didn't notice anything).

All I can say, I'm blown away by the looks of this sword. I still have to try the handling fully, but I was a bit surprised by the "weight" - the sword is not as fast as I expected by the photos, but I guess that's the price for that nice rigid and strong blade. Also, it's larger than I thought. But I love it, it screams late 15th century.

Thanks! I should have taken better photos instead of using my phone. I took it out today and used gun blue to darken the metal pins in the grip. I then managed to drop the sword on the cement floor of my garage! Luckily it landed hilt first so no harm done.

Blaz,

the Earl looks great. When I got my first Albion it made all the windlass stuff I had spent years collecting look like crud. With much wisdom there is much grief...

If it was mine, I would call it "Winzling" (mite) or "Taschenmesser" (pocket knife) Razz

I love that coustille too! Happy

Now that I have shipped away both the oxblood and this one, I kind of miss those handy little swords.

Maybe I'll grab one for myself someday.

Hilariously, Babelfish translates "Eine Kleine Nachtmesser" as "Small night measurers". However, I now know that kleine means small.

As for the coustelle, while the hilt upgrades are great, the scabbard is your typical Windlass storage device. I'm considering sending it off to Christian for a type 3 guard and then making my own small scabbard for it, when I get the money that is.

True, kleine means small. I think "Eine Kleine Nachtmesser" would translate as " A small nightknife." However, "Eine kleine bewaffnende schwert", which translates as a small arming sword, may be more appropriate... Very nice sword, M. It certainly looks like one I'd play with a lot.

The Earl dosen't seem to get much press, looking at yours makes me wonder why. About the handling, your opinion may change after you gain some more familiarity. My Regent surprised me the same way, but after some further handling I realised that what I was feeling was the forward pivot point, it is very near the tip and gives the blade a very distinct presence. It is not slow, although holding it static, you might get the impression of a fairly heavy sword. Once it is in motion the feel is very solid but not heavy at all, changes in direction are actually very quick.

My 'antiqued' Albion Kingmaker

My word, that's beautiful! You know as a longstanding katanaphile and Chinese arms enthusiast, I've been toying with the idea of getting my first European sword recently but wasn't sure where to start. Then I discovered this site and started reading up on the subject. I was browsing through Albion's offerings and really loved the look of the Kingmaker; very classy and elegant in design.

I still wasn't 100% sold on getting a medieval sword until Albion announced their July sale (combined with their active duty/veteran discount). And I have to agree with Gabriel that the bare shiny steel fittings also made me think the hilt furniture was somehow "naked" as well and thought it might be a good idea to antique or blue the fittings (didn't know Albion offered this until now).

I'm definitely getting the Kingmaker now! Big Grin The darkened fittings and brown grip are just lovely, and match the fittings on my iaito (sadly my only real katana-esque blade at the moment, not including some custom bokken) and design tastes in swords. Thanks for helping me decide once and for all!

And browsing through your own site, Brian, I have to say you do some amazing work on scabbards and belts too! Excellent stuff. Once I finish hashing out some other purchases (who needs necessities like furniture, eh?) I might just call upon your services for my Kingmaker. Happy

I bought the XVIII longsword when Tinker had his sale a few weeks back. today we had a cloudy afternoon - perfect for pictures of sharp pointy steel.

Gonna have to ask for more pictures of that basket! Dosen't look like anything I have seen from Scott in the past, it appears to be very nice work though. Do you happen to know if it is based on a particular example? It looks like the fully-developed (frontally symmetrical) version of the hilts in the last chapter of Mazansky's "British Basket Hilted Swords".
