I know this thread is somewhat old, but I just happened on Sharon Kay Penman's extremely good book: Here Be Dragons published in 1985. It sounds from the title like it would be typical fantasy trash, but it is actually a really good historical 'fiction' about King John I, and his daughter Joanna, and her marriage to Llywelyn the Great of Wales. It is wonderfully good, with very real historical fact, and then a story woven into the fact. I quite enjoyed it!
Thought others might too!

What a great old thread!

Harold Lamb wrote a lot of really good historical fiction back in the first half of the Twentieth Century. Many of his stories are set in Central Asia and full of adventure, battles, escapes, wily Cossacks and dangerous beauties.

Leigh Brackett set wonderful stories in the deadly cities of Mars and the dying planet of Skaith.

Karl Edward Wagner's Kane stories are evil and entertaining. If you like Abercrombie or Willocks you'll love Wagner.

A more contemporary author I like is Scott Oden, He writes very good historical fiction and has a good new fantasy series out as well.

I am currently reading Cato series by Simon Scarrow, and planning to read Videssos series by Harry Turtledove afterwards. First one is about an officer in Roman Legion, while second is basically about fantasy equivalent of Byzantine Empire.

Tim Willocks published the follow-up to The Religion, titled Twelve Children of Paris. Fantastic! Story very much driven by violence and combat
