An old sword that looks like a form of kriegsmesser:

Here's another Viking-era sword, a bit less suspicious than the recent "engraved" blade, but still "undocumented."

Hello all,

Hope I've placed this in the correct forum? Apologies if not!

Have just been browsing on eBay and I came across this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/EFTIS-HIGHLY-IMPORTANT-...dZViewItem

Apparently it's an original, dated to approximately 900AD, Viking Sword (Oakshott Type X). It is in amazing condition for its age, and has a lovely zoomorphic etched pattern running the length of the blade. What a find! According to the seller, the Sword was originally found in Eastern Europe, Danube region in 1954.

Regards to everyone Happy

Richard Edain.

Came across another one!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Original-Viking-sword-9...dZViewItem

Weird. Been browsing for a while, as a key interest of mine is the Viking blade, but to come across two original blades of this level of preservation is so unusual...

Anyway, though this is listed in Monaco (eBay), the seller in his listing states that it is provenanced to an old dig in Scotland.

Just once I'd like to see one of these that didn't have a wishy washy provenance and wasn't being sold by an altruistic buyer who wasn't selling it at FAR below what he could get for it if he took it to a reputable auction house... Big Grin

I was discussing this item on another part of the forum. Are we allowed to post links to live auctions BTW?

If they are of interest to the community, they can be posted here. That's what I started the thread for. Happy Auction links are *not* permitted in the Marketplace forum.

If you want to discuss the item in detail, it may be appropriate to post it in the Historic Arms Talk forum.

Found this sword on ebay, I've never seen a blade like that. The guard reminds me of a victorian repro but the makers mark is legitemate. He has another pappenheimer sword that is unusual too...no knucklebow.

Maybe not quite what you were looking for, but here's a reputable auction house making a documented(!) sword available on ebay...

A Sword Of The Viking Period

Those of you who regularly check out the Hermann Historica auctions will no doubt have already seen this, it's featured in their current online catalogue along with a number of other lovely items.

No, I considered bidding $15, but didn't get back to it before the auction ended. I might have won it, but oh well. Next time.... hehe
