By back alley mentality, I was focusing on the seedy side. Certainly there were the "in the open" type of event combats. But on the flip side, there was likely the behind the ale house type as well that involved only a few and impromptu. No contest they were much more lethal. We have never had to fight in this sort of manner, so there was a lethality that can only come from this period and we aren't able to recreate.
