My father found this knife when he was younger (~1958) He recently asked me if I could use the powers of the Internet to find some historical information about it. It was found in a remote location near Beresford, New Brunswick, Canada.
They had it appraised locally which resulted in:
Quote:
1 Hand Wrought Iron Hand Dagger (or Letter Opener?) with Folksy Fleur-de-Lys on Hand Tip. Important Canadiana Value. $350
I would appreciate any sort of information about this. I tried googling (regular and image search) with every keyword I could think of and wasn't able to find anything.
While you're waiting for a more informed response, I'm going to hazard a guess and say that piece may just be a one-off blacksmith design, perhaps a demonstration since no real amount of time seems to have been put into it. It does not look practical as a hand-held object either, however there may still be some kind of folk/crafts provenance behind it.
