The Museum of Cultural History in Oslo has for the first time released details regarding the discovery of an ornate sword of Petersen type AE, very similar to the well known Suontaka sword from Finland.

The sword was discovered in 2011 in a burial ground at Langeid in Aust-Agder county, southern Norway. The elaborate grave belonged to a high-class individual, and can be dated to around 1030.
The details of the hilt decoration are quite different from the Suontaka sword. Similar spiral decorations appear on another sword of the same type held in Oslo, inventory no. C36640. Most interesting is the unique decoration of a hand holding a Christian cross at the top of the pommel.

Wow! Great discovery! The AE swords are so cool! It's great to see that swords of this quality are still in the earth waiting to be found! Get your metal detectors out, people of Europe! Thanks for posting this. Any chance for more pics of the other sword with the spirals...?

Is that a wire wrapped grip? I thought Cervenka was the only one who put those on viking swords...
Nothing in fencing is really difficult, it just takes work.

Yes, the photos are from http://www.unimus.no/foto/#/search?q=C36640. Lots of great photos on this site, in very high resolution.

Yes! There are definitely a few authentic swords with wire grips, mostly of silver as far as I know. Most of the surviving examples I know of are paired with type S pommels. This one in the British Museum is very similar, right down to the braided wire detail at the ends of the grip.

Here is another from Norway with a similar pommel to the AE's, but different cross...
