Hey guys,
I am studying the ancient swords' marks .
Wolf of Passau and the Unicorn are my favorites. Here, I've read everything with the Search function.
My question is: Are there any texts dealing with the old brands? Perhaps easier to find in German?
Everything you think is useful to help me, is welcome. :)

Hi Maurizio,

The Passau wolf is a guild mark, moreso than a maker's mark. My feeling is that we will find more examples of such guild marks sometimes assigned to a maker, when it is truly a district or national guild mark.

Anybody know any sword that has the imprint of Passau wolf as the one near the arrow?
Impressed with a punch to the horizontal lines.
Anybody know swords that have impressed the mark of the photos that I add?
From authoritative sources, people on this forum, I know that is a baptismal font. ;)

There's a significant section on maker's marks in the book on arms from the Wallace Catalogue series Maurizio, if you haven't seen it already.

A sword in the Severance Collection, Cleveland has this brand.
Someone tell me the country of origin? Germany?
In particular the right brand. It seems the cup of communion.

I am near Cleveland and reached out to the museum to see if the collection is being exhibited at this time. I was there about 6 months ago and they were doing so much work I didn't see it. If no one else gets back to you, I'll try to find out. :cool:

The book "Guida del raccoglitore e dell'amatore di armi antiche", di Jacopo Gelli (1900) contains several maker's marks in the last pages. You can download it for free here (copyright expired):

Here is the response I recieved from the Cleveland Museum on the marks and the sword upon which it is found. It is indeed found in the Severence collection, but it is not currently on display. The staff at the museum was extremely helpful, so if you need anything else, please let me know.

Hand and a Half Sword
Germany, mid 16th Century
Materials: Steel, blued pommel and quillons, leather grip
Dimensions: 123.9 cm overall length
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Severance
1916.1506

I have an inquiry into the museum to see if I can post the image. More later.

Enclosed is an image of the sword bearing all three marks, as referenced in my earlier email. Staff told me there could be many more in the collection bearing the chalice mark, but not all the makers marks have been cataloged yet. Of course I offered to help them out...
