Hi All,
Just wondering if some of our resident experts could describe how Petersen's typology works in relation to Viking axes. I managed to glance at a webpage that touched on Petersen's typology, but if anything it looked like the axe types were designated according to the types of swords they were found with (rather than according to their own unique features).
I'm not saying this is what was done-- I am merely asking how it works. I see "Type L" and "Type M" axes on various websites, but have not managed to find descriptions of what that means.

Probably the easiest to find (and use) place for the axe typology is in the Osprey Series book Viking Hersir 793-1066 AD by Mark Harrison and Gerry Embelton, on pages 30 and 32. It also has Petersen's sword and even spear typologies!

Thank you for that-- Mystery solved, then (as soon as I can pick up a copy). I had noticed the spear being mentioned on the aforementioned website, but the axe was presenting me with enough challenges to deflect me from pursuing the spear question. Nonetheless, you have given me a source for both! I am extremely grateful :)
