Johan, my apologies, I misunderstood your question. The woven panels on Steve's helmet are made from iron.

Paul;
Thanks for the answer to my questions about practical issues such as being able to breathe easily.
Funny how some ancient design can be better in some practical ways than latter designs.
Oh, and again those are beautifull Helms, if I seemed to gloss over the beauty of these over their usefullness I'm correcting that now.
You can easily give up your freedom. You have to fight hard to get it back!

No apology needed, thanks for answering. Your observations about the Sutton Hoo helm are quite interesting, I always wondered how it would be to try and use/fight in one of those.

Really, really excellent stuff from top-to-bottom Paul! ...but I think you're going to be needing a shield too.
Coul I ask whether you'd be willing to share any more information with us concerning "Ulf?" That's a wonderful helm he's made, and I'd be very curious to find out more about his work. I know that Paul Binns sometimes goes by that name, and I at first assumed that it was him to whom you were referring. However, he's located in Cambridgeshire if I'm not mistaken...
Thanks for sharing this with us!

Hello C. L.,
Ulf does, sometimes, make swords for Paul Binns. I am afraid that I don't have his contact details at present but I will get them and contact you by pm.
The shield is on its way.
Cheers,
Paul

Paul,
Please give Stephen my compliments. I have his book The Warrior's Way and it's one of my favorites concerning Anglo-Saxon England.

Fantastic stuff! I believe I've seen that Sutton Hoo helmet up close several times (I believe it's this one?: http://www.flickr.com/photos/archeon/13990858/ ), and it's a fantastic piece of craftmanship. It's great to see all these reproductions together. Looks like an amazing project to get all of that together, even in modern times. Do you have any photos of the individual pieces?

It is that helmet, however, the one you linked to is a reproduction and not the original. | I was refering to this specific reproduction. I've seen it several times, in Archeon in the Netherlands, and in Middelalder Centered in Denmark. Of course I'm very familiar with the original, I've stood with my nose against the glass on front of it many times

I see now what you mean. My confusion. At least it gave me the chance to show the original.

Hi Jeroen,
The reproduction that you posted is made by Hanwei, mine is made by Dave Roper. I'll try and post some detailed pictures of it. The one I have at the moment is being replaced as Dave was not satisfied with it and has made some imporovements. The new one is due in March 2006.
Sorry for the dealy in posting.

I made that a couple of years ago and had to do everything without
recourse to casting! The woven bars are iron.
I've seen Pauls's sword and it is great, absolutely fabulous.
I'm not sure if I've seen his Dave Roper helmet but I'm sure it's great too. In my opinion Dave Roper is making the best bronze castings in the country and he was even the best over ten years ago when I first saw his brooches.
To clear up a little mistake : I don't sometimes make swords for Binnsy, I sometimes make organic late Roman hilts for his fine pattern-welded blades.
