Hello folks,
I have been thinking about possibly making myself a Scottish basket hilt for a while, and I just wondered if anyone knew of any good sources of information regarding their construction ? I am shortly moving up north a bit to the hills of Telemark, where the winters are long and dark , so I expect to find time to make this hopefully, over the forthcoming winter :)
As ever, any in formation would be greatly appreciated.Many thanks in advance.

Checkout this album by Vince Evans .....Scottish Basket-hilt Construction .
Vince, or fellow hammerman Eljay Erickson, would be two of the best makers to direct any questions you may have about the process, as they are the two best basket-hilt makers I've seen !

Thankyou very , very much for that Mac. That was exactly the sort of thing I was looking for :p That was roughly the way that I thought that they were made , but wasn't certain as they might have been made like the English mortuary swords in a single piece.
Well , I must say that I have great deal of respect for the original smiths who could only fire weld their hilts. I have MIG, TIG,Oxy-acetelyne and arc welding equipment and the forge, but the thought of fire welding these hilts and still have it looking like a sword at the end of the process, that is something I would not like to contemplate ! :eek:
Unfortunately the other two sites would not load correctly, but this has given me the information that I lacked. Thanks again !

I double-checked the other links and they are working ..... not sure why your having trouble ?
Try them again, as PictureTrail sometimes goes on the blink in order to service the site !

I think picture trail just doesn't like me :cry: The first album with the sequence of the swords construction works fine , but the other two just draw blanks everytime. Oh well....one day ! Thanks again though.

Thankyou , I was able to access the albums via the other link :) Trouble is , I am now spoilt for choice ! :lol: I do like the 'Stirling' hilt, but also like the examples with the looped wrist guard, ie the brass and steel backsword by Vince Evans. Obviously I want to start at the top and work my way down ! :eek: :\ I just hope that it is a long hard winter ! :lol:
Did they ever use ' Turks heads' on the grips on basket hilts by the way ? I do not recall having seen any.

Yes, turks head were used !
The majority of Stirling hilts that I've come across tend to have silver or brass ferrules, but turks head examples are there, too, right along with 'em !

Great ! :) I jus' love ' Turks heads ' on grips, though tying them in wire is a real pain to do ! Thankyou for the information gents. Nice grip Allen, what does the rest of it look like though .......hint, hint :D
