I have started on a scabbard for the Seax that Jesse Frank made, and thought some of you might like to see some in-progress shots.
I started with a piece of 5/6 oz veg-tanned leather, which I thoroughly soaked in faucet-hot water. I then formed the leather around the seax, capturing it's structure fairly closely. I continued to mold the leather as it began to dry. Once it began to shrink, I stitched the seam. I dyed it oxblood first, then tan. This left it still too red for my liking, so I oiled it. This produced the deep brown with a reddish hue that appears in the pics. (full-size pics are in my personal album on this site) Pardon the shadows...
Anyway, this is where it is at this moment:

I've set it aside for now, as my commissioned projects have priority, but will move forward soon. I plan to add copper fittings to the seam edge, as well as rigging for belt loops. I'm still feeling out how I want to manage the engraving, or even if I want to. I want to compliment the seax, not understate nor overpower it.

Thanks. Never fancied myself an artist, rather just someone who's too stubborn to know when to quit. Perhaps I'll need to change my perspective.
I was able to get the leather online through Tandy Leather, though there are a number of resources. At the time, I wasn't aware of anything local, but have since found out that there is a Leather Factory in New Orleans. It appears as though they are sister companies. I ended up getting a half of 2/3 oz, and a half of 5/6 oz. That should keep me in the scabbard business for a good while. If you are looking for a small piece, you may be better off going to a store in your area or finding a shoe repair place.
