Hi All,
Here is a new dagger from me based on some photographs of an original piece. Unfortunately I am not sure of the source of the photographs, so can't tell you where it is now. However it is undoubtedly a German early 16thC piece and the guard form was popular with Landsknechts, so that is who I see as having owned the original piece.
The original had an all bronze hilt, but my customer asked for a wooden central section and so I fitted this with a walnut grip and the guard and pommel are bronze.
The Landsknechts seemed to favour either very bulbous and chunky pieces or otherwise very slender, almost delicate pieces and this of course falls into that category, the grip being little more than 12mm/1/2" thick at the guard.
The pommel is hollow, otherwise it would be too heavy and is of a hexagonal form and that comes down through the grip and into the top of the guard.
The guard itself has a Nagel?/ring? on one side only and this asymmetry is seen on many Landsknecht daggers and the the guard blends into hexagonal finials at the ends.
The blade is a simple diamond section 25cm/10" long.
The sheath is made from double layer veg tan and finished with a bronze chape.
