I have my Grandfathers Infantry sword (Durham Light Infantry) and have noticed that it has Edward VII basket with a George V blade. Has anyone come across this before and could explain why?

Perhaps it was originally constructed from whatever components were available at the time, hence the mismatched blade and basket? Or, it was damaged and rehilted, for example, and this resulted in the differences? During the reign of which king did your grandfather serve? That might be more suggestive of the answer.

Thanks for your opinion. I did think it might be something like that. The sword maker having manufactured during the end of, and new reign of a monarch, using existing stock. My Grandfather, Major Gerald Sopwith MC, (Durham Light Infantry). His service was during George V. I just thought the sword was unusual, covering two monarchs.
Thanks.
