I am curious as to the purpose of the prickers that were sometimes included as accessories with some swords, knives, and daggers. I can understand why a smaller accessory knife would be included - many uses for a smaller knife - but what was the pricker for? And for the purpose of my question I am not including the pricker-like Japanese sword accessories, just the European ones.

So, more of a sharpening steel than anything else, then?

If you read much of what has been said in the topics on this site alone, you'll see that these had multiple uses from being an awl, to an implement for cleaning out firearms, to an eating utensil, to a tool used to measure distance, and perhaps being left hard enough to be used as a sharpening steel.
