Here is an interesting blog post about historical design. Many hilts some by famous artists. They use the form and embellish in the popular styles of the time.

Some are a bit over the top for my taste but I especially like this one.

It is a similar idea to an early Indian sword I have seen that had a whole city depicted on the pommel.
