Hello all,
I have a question. A local swordsmith is making me a custom sword (something hes not planning on doing anymore). He originally made me a two-hander (oakshott XII i think). But, having progressed in his work since, he wants to make me a new one instead. I'm a (amateur, i suppose) reenactor, and prefer sword and shield fighting to longsword combat. So i've asked him to make an arming sword instead. Anyway, my question is: what kind of decorations would a European 1350-1400 sword have. By the way, i reenact a Serbian knight (well, i will, once i finish my kit). In this period there were plenty of german mercenaries in Serbia, and there was a lot of import from italy. So sources don't have to be limited to Serbia. The swordsmith said he can do any kind of engraving. What kind of designs were used, and on which parts of the sword?
Thanks,
George P.

Sometimes answers take 24 hours or more....
I'd invite you to check out our Oakeshott Spotlight series on our Features Page. Those articles show a wide cross-section of swords from your era and should be a good start.
