Hi all!

It is my great pleasure to announce the upcoming publication of Nicoletto Gigantiís The School of the Sword Ė A New Translation by Aaron Taylor Miedema. The publication and on sale date is July 15th, 2014, with a list price of $19.95 US. Hereís the back cover blurb:

Quote:
Rapier fencing and duelling during the 16th and 17th centuries was dominated by the Italian masters, whose systems of sword fighting became increasingly sophisticated. Breaking away from this trend, Nicoletto Giganti developed something different: a frugal system of fencing that cut to the core of what a swordfight was and how to win it. Gigantiís Scola overÚ Teatro, or The School of the Sword, became one of the most influential systems of fencing across Europe in the seventeenth century.

In this remarkable new translation by historical fencing instructor and historian Aaron Taylor Miedema, author of Bayonets and Blobsticks, Gigantiís work is presented fresh to the modern reader. Copiously illustrated with redrawings of dozens of Gigantiís original plates, over 60 new photographs, and even a new plate, Gigantiís detailed curriculum is augmented by comprehensive annotation and commentary. Regardless of whether you are a historian, a casual reader with an interest in the sword, or an accomplished swordsman, Nicoletto Gigantiís The School of the Sword is a fascinating guide to the art of rapier fencing.

The book can be pre-ordered from Amazon.com at http://www.amazon.com/Nicoletto-Gigantis-Scho...+the+Sword

...and Barnes & Noble at http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/nicoletto-gig...1927537077

(That said, right now it looks like neither Amazon nor Barnes & Noble is too concerned with respecting the publication or on sale dates, so there is a good chance that if you order right now, you will get the copy shortly after. Iím trying to do something about that, but I donít think Mr. Miedema will object too much to having royalties generated early...)

Hi all!

Efforts to make Amazon actually respect the July 15th publication date of The School of the Sword have failed (and this includes a baffling 30-45 minute call to Amazon corporate which went pretty much nowhere while being transferred around two or three different divisions in the company). Amazon.com is still selling the book, regardless of what the release date may be.

So, in order to even the playing field for bookstores and booksellers, the publication date has been changed to May 1st, 2014. The book will be available for order (and hopefully even on the shelves) at your local bookstore at that time. The Kindle e-book will also be released on the same day.

I first came across Nicoletto Giganti's book The School of the Sword after visiting The HEMA Podcast's website (www.hemapodcast.com).
