|

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows about this type of axe? I have seen it occasionally in re-enactment pictures and it has piqued my curiosity, but as yet, I have been unable to pin down any terminology or historical finds for it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There have been a couple of finds of similar axes, but they were dane axes, and they had a cross inside the opening.
They were also quite thick, so the opening was not to make them lighter.
Not sure about the typology though.

Sorry for the poor image quality, but its from my phone last visit to national museum of Copenhagen. As you can see they have a couple on display. I can't remember the info attached exactly of what they claim to be origin or timespan, but my guess would be the later part of the Viking age, possibly even early Middle Ages.[/img]
