This listing is marked SOLD and is no longer available

This is a seax designed by me about 4 years ago and forged by Rob Miller of Scotland. It is what you might call a 'historical fantasy' piece, inspired by the collision of Norse, Saxon, and Celtic influences in northern Britain. At the time I was quite interested in this fusion of styles, but as we've all experienced, tastes change and collections move in different directions. So this one is going to go, with some regrets, because Rob is a great guy and a talented 'smith, and I plan to work with him again when I dream up another piece that speaks of his talents... Big Grin

The broken-back style blade is 17.25" long, a hair more than 1/4" thick at the spine, and very sharp. A 4" row of acid-etched knotwork is on either side. The pommel and guard are iron which I cold-blued, giving a pleasingly aged, mottled effect. The handle is -- if I remember correctly -- bog oak, carved with a broad knot in the center. It has a simple, non-historical sheath with iron chape.

If mathematical precision is your taste, this piece might not be to your liking. It has a rugged, roughly-hewn, stout feel about it -- just as I requested. It is solid and well made, however, and the blade is true and nicely finished. It has the feel of a working sidearm.

One disclaimer: the top of the handle developed two shallow (connected) cracks, about a year after I got it (after much dry handling, but no cutting). I drizzled some epoxy into these cracks, and in the years since they have gotten no worse. I wouldn't expect them to worsen at this point, but it would be easy enough to fit a new handle if you like, as the pommel is threaded. I photographed the crack (see below); I think it actually looks worse with the flash than it does in hand, but there you have it.. Happy

$375 includes shipping to the US. Thanks.
