Up for sale is this early American 5-ball eaglehead saber, with beautiful blueing and goldwork, complete with scabbard/ suspension.

I picked this sword up a couple of years ago from an auctioneer, and as his description is both accurate and to-the-point, I’ll use it here:

An antique U.S. military eagle head sword with its original leather scabbard...

Passed down through a Southern Maine family with the lore that an ancestor of now unknown name carried it in the Civil War. The sword is a known earlier type with no maker's markings found. The blade is nicely decorated with a fancy hand engraved filigree. Etchings begin at the hilt and continue approx. half way down the blade. A portion of the design is on a blue background and has gold highlights. This coloring appears to be missing from the upper sections of both sides of the blade. One side incorporates a cannon, shield, arrow and flag on standard while the other a flag on standard and a quiver.

Sword measures approx. 33 3/4" from the top of the pommel to the tip of blade. Blade alone measures 28" long and 1 1/8" wide. The thickness graduates downward from 15/16" to 1/16".

The overall condition of the blade is very good with no nicks or cracks and tip is intact. The blade surface has patches of discoloration and light corrosion mainly which are located in the lower section. Although blade is firmly attached to the bone grip there is approx. 1/8" of side to side movement. Grip is without cracks or chips. There is an approx. 1/4" side to side movement in the guard and eagle head pommel. No breaks or repairs found on the sword. The scabbard is missing its tip but otherwise both it and the original leather belt hanger are in very good condition overall. Stitching is fully intact and the leather remains pliable. Both the upper and lower brass scabbard fittings are loose but are in place. No maker's marks or designs found anywhere on the scabbard.
