----------------
Credited with creating the first eclectic blending of Asian and European martial arts, in 1901, British gentleman E.W. Barton-Wright opened his Bartitsu Club in Shaftesbury Avenue, foreshadowing Jeet Kun Do and modern MMA. Most notable about this long defunct yet forward looking martial art was its inclusion in Sir Aurthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novel _The Adventure of the Empty House_ where Holmes is said to be a practitioner of the art of "Baritsu."
