This is an infantry or artillery officers "hanger" (short sabre) with an early example of a sawback blade. It's probably from around 1630, and represents a fairly common style from across continental europe and indeed the british isles.

The Andrea Ferrara blades are not all made by the Ferrara family themselves, nor by Andrea. Sir Walter Scott notes that the name of Andrea de Ferrara was inscribed "on all the Scottish broadswords that are accounted of peculiar excellence"

Having said that, the blade is stamped and inscribed lends towards the argument it's an actual Ferrara, as many of the swords considered to have been actually made by that family bear both an inscription and a stamp.

The dating on this means it cannot be made by the first generation smith (who lived some 40 years earlier) but may be one of his decendants - or merely one of the many people who copied the name onto their blades.

Having said all that, the blade is very well made, and the handle is quite nice too. The decorations are quite typical of that time period, and are well executed.
