For sale:
An original vintage replica of a Viking 'spectacle' made in the late 1990's or early 2000's by Windlass Steelcrafts/Museum Replicas Ltd. The helmet has a four-part, riveted radial 'Spangenhelm' construction with a 'spectacle' upper face guard like the famous helmet from Gjermundbu in Norway, the only actual surviving helmet of the Viking Age, now in the National Museum in Oslo. Windlass decided to add articulated cheek pieces and a slightly articulated neck guard - not historically accurate but looking very cool. The helmet is well made in solid riveted construction, but in a lighter gauge of steel, so it only weighs about four pounds, a big plus, as anyone who has worn a seven pound heavy gauge helmet for more than a half hour knows only too well. The steel helmet shell measures 7 1/2 inches side to side and 9 inches front to back. There is a nice soft suede leather interior suspension lining with long chin straps and some padding behind it along the brow, so the interior circumference within the lining is 23 1/2 inches max, a helmet for medium to smaller heads. Some chips on the black interior paint of the cheek pieces and face guard, but exterior in excellent, original brushed satin finish. Asking 200 plus shipping.
