Superb, French Mle 1822, Light Cavalry Sabre and scabbard.
These elegant swords, following the Restoration of the French Monarchy were issued to cavalry regiments, including Hussars and Horse Artillery, and after 1830 to Lancer regiments. This sword is a higher quality Officer version.
Engraved on the back edge of blade, "Manufacture de Klingenthal Coulaux aine et Cie" and the blade fuller has a straight ending not curved, showing the blade to be definitely pre 1830. The fine sword blade appears to the best of my knowledge, to have been manufactured around the year 1822. There are two very worn poincon stamps to the ricasso, one for Joseph Bisch or Jean Bureau(?), the other Victor Guidonet.
Flamboyantly decorated brass hilt, which is later than the blade, a post 1840 Officer's hilt, typically French in style. Two swept guard bars merge with the knuckle guard. The counter guard is lozenge shaped. The grip is large and undulating, covered in leather and bound with wires. A canted pommel with swags of leaf decoration completes the package.
The slightly curved blade is in perfect condition. It measures an impressive 36.5 inches in length. It has a wide fuller and smaller one above.
The steel scabbard is in wonderful condition bar one very slight dent close to the drag where the spurs have caught the scabbard, and fits the sword very well. A poincon stamp for Bisch or Balaran(?) is seen on the drag.
