This Italian M1860 Heavy Cavalry Trooper's Sword measures 41.5" overall and weighs approx. 2.5 lbs. The blade measures 35" and the scabbard measures 36.75" and weighs approx. 1.75 lbs. The hilt and scabbard have a dark brown patina and the single edged blade is in good condition with very light areas of brown patination and has one broad fuller on each side. The sword is marked S&K on the ricasso for Schnitzler & Kirschbaum of Solingen, Germany. According to Bezdek's German Swords and Sword Makers, this firm was active between 1811 and 1864. As this sword is an M1860, the sword probably dates sometime between 1860 and 1864. The grip is leather with brass wire wrap. The hilt has an old repair, having what appears to be the head of a nail or tack holding the wire down in one spot. The patination on the nail/tack head matches that of the scabbard and guard.
