For Sale: Pattern-Welded(damascus)knife by M.Sachse(kershaw)
This listing has been REMOVED and is no longer active

This knife was made by Manfred Sachse in Solingen, Germany. This knife comes complete with: leather sheath, hand-rubbed velvet lined mahogany display box, a card signed and dated (in ink) by the smith, a framable certificate by Kershaw explaining pattern-welded (damascus) steel and signed by Pete Kershaw (president of Kershaw cutlery).
The blade is hand forged 320 fold pattern-welded (damascus) steel. The hilt is hand carved indian Sambar stag antler. The entire knife is brand new it was made on 4-30-86 but has been kept in box in a smoke-free home, oiled regularly, and has never been used (original edge!!!)

Framable Kershaw certificate reads:
"THE DAMASCUS STEEL STORY"
"The distinctive pattern of this Damascus steel knife is hand-forged in Solingen, Germany, using a process dating back to the steel swords of the Middle Ages.
There are only a few knife makers in the entire world who have the talent to create this same kind of metallurgical art. Mr. Manfred Sachse, of Solingen Germany, is one of this rare breed.
The blade of the Kershaw Damascus Knife is a lamination of 320 layers of iron and steel. To accomplish the lamination, glowing iron is hammered and folded 320 times, producing a marbled blade many times the strength of a single piece.
The blade is then heat treated to a Rockwell hardness of C55-56 and dipped in acid that eats away the iron from the surface. It is this process that brings out the wavy layered grain in the steel. Like fingerprints no two are the same.
Solid core indian Sambar stag horn is used to hold the blade tang.
Each knife is serial numbered and Mr. Sachse will make fewer than 500 of these knives each year. The card that accompanies this knife shows the serial number, the date of manufacture and his signature.
Each knife is guaranteed to be perfect.
Pete Kershaw, President"

Card reads:
Serial no. 588
forged by Manfred Sachse
manufactured: 30.4.86
Solingen, West Germany

I'm still trying to figure out how the card that comes with the blade says the steel was "folded 320 times". YIKES. That would make WAY MORE than 320 layers of steel. You get a 320 layer blade by folding the steel fewer than 10 times.

Still, she's really pretty, and I'm thinking of raiding the piggy bank.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Manfred Sachse has written several books on pattern-welding, and his products are known world wide for their quality and durability. This was one of the few made in West Germany during the communist era and this is your chance to own a piece of modern knife making history. This kind of item does not come up often, the person who buys this will have made an amazing deal.
I no longer have a job and am loath to part with this, but I am desperate for money
