Waisted Grips
Why do some swords have severely waisted and faceted grips as opposed to simpler round or oval grips. Was this a stylisitc issue or one of practicality for fencing styles. If so what benefit do these waisted grips impart to the swrodsman (or swordswoman).

What type of swords could be expected to have these grips. I am only aware of various forms of Oakshott's XVIII's.
Oakeshott discusses grips in his various articles. You can read about some of it in our article about him.
