Greetings folks. I have some questions regarding Scottish Targes and the Irish equivalents. According to a friend of mine, there was an irish word targa (now targaid) which of course is the origin for the scots gaelic word. It is in fact a borrowing from old norse. I have read that the Irish also carried a 'round shield'. In some early documents... glancing through the Táin Bó Cualgne, a "sciath" seems to be the normal choice of shield. Old Irish is fonder of compound words than Modern Irish, so you've got lots of references to "dubscíath" and "gelscíath" and "cromscíath" and "crundscíath" ("black-shield", "bright-shield", "curved-shield", "round-shield") but I don't get the impression they're distinct types of shields, just descriptive terms being applied.

Does anyone know of an Irish equivalent for the Scottish Targe?

Thanks in advance
Rick

The dismounted Irish horseman at bottom right has a round target and the strap construction is visible (accurately depicted or not).
