I'll second that -- Steve's POS is one of my favorite pieces by ElJay. The man really knows how to capture the look (and feel) of the originals.

I am absolutely FLOORED at the work Eljay does. Guy, these basket hilts are AMAZING. Up until now, I have only collected antiques. Now I am very inspired to have Eljay make a baskey hilt for me.

Hello
After wanting one for a long time,I get to join the rolls of proud, E.B.E. hilted sword owners :-) Its been mounted to a, Del Tin, backsword blade,by Scott Wilson at Darkwood Armory.

Very nice!! Did you send the hilt to Scott for hilting or did you get the blade and mount it yourself? I have something I'd like to send Scott if he'd be open to the work. I'm not having much luck getting makers to deliver in reasonable time-frames for such work and am looking for another option.

Hello
I bought the blade awhile back.I sent the, blade and hilt, in to Darkwood armory, and they modified the blade to fit,and allso sharpened it. i`am real pleased with the end product. He does things for a reasonable price, and is allso fairly timely.

Nice work by Eljay on that one ..... he recreated the same design back in 2003 for, as I recall, Alex McCracken !
Anyway, in a recent auction that Thomas Del Mar LTD. had in London (Antique Arms, Armour & Militaria Sale

there was a baskethilt of the same design as the Chicago piece by, as they are fairly certain, is the work of the great WAS.

A SCOTTISH BASKET-HILTED BROADSWORD, PROBABLY BY WALTER ALLEN OF
STIRLING, MID-18TH CENTURY
with tapering late 17th/early 18th Century blade of hollow-diamond
section, etched and gilt with a dragon within an oval enclosed by the
bladesmith's inscription 'Iohann Hildertz' and 'Me fecit Solingen' on
the respective faces, and each with an etched anthemion on either side
(rubbed), iron basket hilt of fluted bars, comprising broad
knuckle-guard formed of a wide panel filled with a framework of
vertical bars, filled with an alternating pattern of single and double
ovals, fluted forward guard, side-guards filled with a pattern of
diagonal bars, rams horns and hearts involving the stylised letters
'W' and 'A', scrolling wrist-guard, the upper tier of the basket
comprising a central heart and two bars joined to a ring-shaped
finial, the former flanked by two further hearts, contemporary fluted
bun-shaped pommel, and spirally-carved sharkskin-covered grip bound
with plaited silver wire

The attribution to Allan is based on a similar hilt that is signed by him, preserved in the Art Institute of Chicago (no.1982. 3287).

Interestingly there is also a silver baskethilt that sold there for 24,000.GBP which has a very similar design to another (steel) WAS, LA 125, which resides in the Allan Family case at the Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh.
They are quite certain this is also the work of WAS & silversmith Collin Mitchell.

'Ol Walter must have had certain customers that liked a perticular design, or one that he liked and felt should be created again, in this case silver.
