This tulwar has a solid sivler hilt and a shamshir blade inlaid with a boduh and an inscription.

Jens, it's hard to see in the photo, but is that blade wootz?

Also, is the cartouche in Arabic, Farsi or another language?

And I guess if I had been in their position, I'd have done the same thing."

Andrew,

The blade is probably an import from Persia, or it could be made in India in Persian style – anyway the blade does not have a ricasso. Yes it is wootz, but rather dark.
I cant read the cartouche, but someone has translated it for me, it is supposed to say ‘Made by Mirza Ali’, and I think it is in Farsi.
The Buduh is a talisman inlaid on the blade, usually together with another inscription, a name, or a sentence. Most Buduh’s consist of four squares, but six or nine squares can also be seen.

Jens
