Yup, the metal bits should be just fine. It is the rags or other textiles that come into contact with it that can be the danger. His armor came out of it with some firescale on it that when buffed out made for a nice antiqued patina. But I think that your burning home burning down was an expensive way to achieve that finish :eek: . For me I would hang the rags up to dry outside and never store them in a heap, just in case.

IIRC, the instructions call for a very thin coat of the stuff, then more thin layers on top of that if needed. My method was to get the stuff all over the rag and rub it into the fibers of the rag for the first use, then just store the rag in the jar. So, it's not so much a matter of the RW migrating to a clean rag from storage. Rather, the storage just refreshes the already saturated rag after use. Seems to work. My collection still tended to rust if I didn't refresh the wax every couple of months, but I had it displayed in a dangerous place--on shelves under dusty old books in an old house with wildly fluctuating temps and humidity. The dust would build up on the steel and, apparently, just funnel moisture down to the surface. I now have a new house(!) and will soon have a purpose-built vertical display for my reproductions. :D Every piece in my collection is about to get a thorough cleaning and waxing. I'll be cleaning my wife's Roman lorica segmentata as well, and it'll be interesting to see how much of my RW is used up in this major cleaning effort.
