Hand-welding maille
I am pondering the possibility of getting a rivited maille hauberk and then welding some of the rings shut, under the armpits and around the neck and shoulders. But its just an idea and i thought id run it by here, to see if anyone has any experience with anything similar..? Maby do it with some sort of butane hand-welder..
why?
Well as a test, if you can make links stronger by welding the rivets..but like stated its only an idea..how it will work it practice is an other subject...
I've seen SCA-type websites advertise mail with rings that are all welded shut. Apparently it's faster and easier to make than riveted mail, but stronger than butted.
As test it might be interesting !? I would think that either riveted or welded would give better results than riveted AND welded ? The welding process might even weaken some links and if a link was well peened welding shouldn't make the ring any stronger unless one added a lump of extra steel over the rivet.

Also cost ! Doing both to each link would only be worth the time and money if the link ended up measurably stronger.

Oh, repairing a broken link with a weld instead of just rivetting in a new link. :?:
its a tad much i think

there is all welded shirts and coifs out there forsale, i think by master knut is his name. i've worn my riveted alt row shirt for almost 5 years now and no broken links. sca might be a tad different over usage but i dont play that game so i cant answer for them.
Steve Sheldon experimented with forge-welded links and found that heating the rings and using tongs to apply the pressure worked far better than trying to forge-weld with a hammer.
