It's too bad so many people thought poorly of this movie. I, for one, thought it was well made. It is true that it came across somewhat slow, but there was so much to look at. I'm also glad that the production attempted to really give you a feeling of what it was like to show up in Virginia with those guys. But for me it was more about just looking at how well it was filmed. If you are expecting a rip-roaring action flick, prepare to be disappointed. But if you don't mind sitting through a couple of hours of beautiful cinematography and some believable acting, you might actually like it.
Just saw it for the first time last night. I agree with Matt. The New World is a beautiful movie, and one of the reasons for this was no fancy CGI for the scenery so don't expect the art direction to be anything like LOTR; just the natural Virginia landscape which really is a wonder to see. The film editing had the feel of a documentary but was still well-done. Malick's directing is an acquired taste for the viewer, that's for sure. I loved Pocahontas' character development. I'd probably give this movie 3 stars (out of 4).
