Might anyone have pics of this original purported baskethilt of the great MacDonald of Keppoch ?
Pictured is a drawing by James Drummond (from Ancient Scottish Weapons, 1881, cropped from Plate IX. Fig.2) which states it as being the one he carried at Culloden. It appears to be a piece by one of the great Glasgow hammerman, such as John Simpson or Thomas Gemmill, but I've no proof of that either way ?
Just figured I'd ask as I can't seem to locate a pic of it in any of my books/files, and have no idea if it's currently in a private collection or one of the Museums out there ?

Mac.....The information from "Scottish Swords from the Battlefield of Culloden" by Campbell & Mowbray (how about that! a Campbell vetting a MacDonald sword!!), says that the sword of Keppoch was still (c.1971) in the Paton collection as "one of my greatest treasures." You probably have this same reference, but that is the last reference I have to this sword in my library. With the obvious reverence Paton has for the sword, unless the colection was somwhow dispursed in auction, etc. I imagine that is still where it is today. George

Hi George
Sir Joseph Noel Paton, RSA, died in 1901, and his collection of antiquities was dispursed to several museums (NMSE, Hunterian, etc.).
I am unsure exactly what went where, or when, or whether some items were sold to private collectors ?
From Wikipedia:
"One cannot finish speaking of Sir Noel without mentioning that he was a well known antiquary due to collecting arms and armour.
He died in Edinburgh on the 26th of December 1901."
