Coolus helmet help needed!
Hi guys!

I want to make a Roman Coolus Helmet. I plan on a beating (is that called a coldforged?) but I need patterns or a something simillar. Is there any of you who could help me? The thing I gonna base my kit on is this Auxiliae from the Trajan Column.

Thanks!

Coolus helmet..
Hello Martin,

If I can help you in anyway, please feel free to contact me. Roman helmets are fun ! :D
Are you going to try and raise the whole piece in one piece or make it the easier way and braze on the neck guard ?

Here is a coolus type 'G' that I made, it is raised in a single piece,.....

but do not get too excited.......it is only a quarter size miniature ! It was great fun though :p

Perhaps I will hear from you....

Regards as ever,

You have just one choice, the LEGIO VIGESIMA website

http://www.larp.com/legioxx/helmets.html

Tons on info on how to remake everything for the roman soldier and the civilian.

Extremly good caligae patterns
Thanx a million guys :)

I am trying to make somthing like the one from Trajans column as depicted above and I figure I have to make that in one piece.

Wish me luck and I will give you all uppdates on the prosess.

Thanks, Bruno, that's a nice plug!

Martin, I think what we're seeing is not a Coolus helmet but more of what is called "Auxiliary Type B", or possibly even type C which has crossed reinforcements. The second century AD is a little late for Coolus types, though it's also just a tad early for helmets made with reinforcements (though many seem to be getting them as modifications). There's a nice Auxiliary B on this page, 6th helmet down:

Making a Roman helmet in one piece, that's more than I would try! Best of luck to you. I think for the basic pattern you start with a circle whose diameter is equal to the diameter plus the height of the finished helmet. Something like that! And you have to add on some for the neckguard, too. If you are using brass, work it cold but keep annealing (heating and quenching) whenever the metal starts to get hard, or it will crack.

Have fun! Vale,

Thankyou Nathan, they are immense fun to do ! And for people wishing to try their hands at making armour I always suggest trying it in miniature first, especially things like raising helmets ! It is a great , fun, way to learn !

Regards as ever,

Russ
