Manoucher, what do you make of the fact that the kilic I posted has dyed cow horn scales, but is clearly an extremely fine weapon, with an incredible pattern-welded blade and gold koftgari? Seems incongruous to me.

Andrew

You mean the Kilic posted by Artzi on your site!
Yikes. What are you talking about, Manoucher? I made a mistake and, when you pointed it out to me, I immediately admitted to it. I have no chip on my shoulder.

Yes, Artzi posted that kilic on the EEWRS. However, I posted it here. I was genuinely interested in discussing these fascinating swords with you, and asked you a serious question. I should have known better.

Andrew :(

EDIT: Incidently, as you well know, the EEWRS and Vikingsword sites are not "mine". I'm just a moderator, and a new one at that.

Ah! You are absolutely correct, Manoucher! Sorry for the misunderstanding. :) Both are very nice weapons.

I envy you the opportunity to meet with Artzi and handle these. Hopefully, I'll make it to Timonium this year.

I have never been to this Timonium event! Neither do I intend to! I meet Artzi and his son Avner on a regular basis in Germany! Both are true gentlemen. As a matter of fact we just met couple of days ago!!!

Sorry no problems! I thought you were saying something else! I am not that adept at using English! As you know I am not a native speaker of English!

Why the exclamation points Manoucher ?

Timonium is supposed to be quite a nice arms show .

All the best .

I think Andrew and I can discuss this together! Thanks for your intervention anyhow!
My wholepoint was that before talking about a weapon Andrew should have checked the pics carefully, he did and then everything is O.K now I guess

No you did not. The Kilic I posted has the famous Turkish twisted star or ribbon pattern. We have been looking for a good term for the second Kilic with Koftegari at its base. Actually I wanted to keep this thread centered on the Kilic I posted with giraffe horn scales that is why I started this thread. Now we ended up in comparing the two!

:\

I guess I'll drop out of this discussion then .
Don't want to step on any toes .

No problem Rick, no hard feelings.

I'm glad to hear that . :)

I think the confusion in the discussion arises because the 4th picture that you posted was of the other kilik with the gold koftgari that Andrew mentioned from the other forum .

I believe that the first kilik that you posted a picture of is forged in the 'ribbon' pattern while the kilik with the gold koftgari in your 4th post shows a distinct 'star' pattern .

All the best

Fred
You are right I mistakenly posted the wrong pic on the fourth post!

Manoucher
Gentlemen

Sorry for the confusion.

Manoucher
The pattern of the first Kilic is Turkish ribbon or twisted star, the explanation is from Artzi. Anyhow a very good blade, I have to say not as good as earlier Kilics with wootz blade. I do not want to tlak these late Kilics down, they have the best market and collectors seem to love them, but through my intensive discussions with Artzi and Philip Tom we all agree that the earlier baldes have the better quality.
Maybe it is due to the fact that I am very biased and adore early wootz blades. Everyone has his own taste and preferences.
