Gotlandic Hand Axe[SOLD]
Here is an historical interpretation of a hand axe found in Gotland. It features a file finish, and protective patina.

Here is the original:

Here's another one of those Gotlandic axes, but with a haft....

It's amazing, these really long heads do a great job of focusing energy!

This one's spoken for, but I thought you all might get a kick out of seeing it :)
Great looking piece...but WOW that head is long. :surprised:

Yeah, it's always a struggle when doing historical interpretations not to use too much of ones own modern sense of aesthetics. :) Actually, it feels pretty darn good, and wow, does it chop!

That is a nice looking axe.

What are the dimensions of the axe (head / haft etc)?

Where can I find more information about this type of axe?

I have done a search via Google and couldn't find anything.

Is this axe type set in the Viking Era, Vendel Era, Medieval Era or some other Era?

Where these axes tool axes or war axes?

The picture you provided of the original, is that the only original axe head of this type found or are there others?

Any information you can provide will be appreciated.

Thanks

Danny
Jesse,

Great looking piece! I love the work on the handle. It has a great used and worn look to it. Wonderful job!

Best,

Matt
Question
Any idea anybody, of from what time period this axe could be?

Something viking, migration, 500-1000 AD? or maybe BC???

Folkert.
Thanks!

Sorry I missed this for so long.

Actually, I'm not completely sure what the time frame of this axe is. The picture was put in with quite a few others, and some of them range in time from viking age up.

My best guess is that this was intended as a tool. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that it wouldn't work well as a weapon....

The size of the head is about the same as the original, but I don't remember the exact dimensions of the haft for this particular one.
