Patrick, something that I've found useful for cleaning mail is this: wear it as often as possible. An hour or so a day should help - as you move around the mail rubs against the other rings and rubs the rust off.

To keep it the rust off, I heartily recommend furniture polish - Mr Sheen for preference. The wax in the polish settles onto the mail and pushes any moisture away from the metal.
