The new romans are copletely redesigned.
Weight will be slightly lower but the swords will also be quite a bit livelier.
The gerometry is changed as well. Proper sword edges are applied. THe points are strong even if there is some degree of distal taper.
The grips are round in section, but that does not tell the whole picture. I designed the grips after a sword hilt displayed in the British museum. It has a turned grip. It is the shape of the guard and pommel that provides the direction of the grip registering clearly how the edge is aligned. The grips are made so that gripping is like a firm handshake.
Many surviving roman grips are in fact round or equal sided in section even if they are facetted.
Overall the blades are ore subtle in their lines. This is according to those surviving originals I have seen and also the typcal shape as depicted in archaeological reports. The leaf shape of the Mainz is clear, but not exaggerated.
I cannot say when the swords will be available. The team is working hard at Albion developing a great nuber of swords.

Thanks Peter. Another question about the Mainz... will it still be as wide in the blade at the hilt and leaf swell.. as the earlier mainz. close to 3 inches? Thanks again.

It is slightly slimmer, but only by a few milimeters. It mostly has the same size as before, but it is more agile.

Nathan the Count is superb. I just received mine and it is very light and fast. Smaller than I thought from the pics online. I love the dissimilar materials in the hilt componets, (although at first I wasn't so sure.) Overall a very nice sword.

I want to see it as well, in person. I truly admire the piece, but I just don't know how I'll personally feel about the dissimilar hilt. It'll either bond with me or it won't, but I just can't get a feel from a picture. I'll keep my fingers crossed - if I can find the strength and willpower to put down that Svante, that is.

I know what you mean about the Svante!.....I WILL have that sword one day. I am about due for my next free sword from Albion (God I love that deal!!!) I am seriously thinking about plunking that towards the Svante. Then it will only be MILDLY extravagant!!
Nathan, I can always be bribed with food and BEER. I can bring over several of my new toys!!!!

I'm thinking the same way, Dave! The "deal" works great for those of us fortunate enough to be able to participate. I'm teetering between putting this towards either the Svante or the Brescia. Oh, and I don't call it "extravagant" - it's my version of "pampering", my "day at the spa". I like to schedule a monthly "treatment"  . We'll have to see how it goes. Mike already knows to expect a multi-piece order in July, and we've talked on a couple of occasions about my acquisition strategy. Until then, I am probably going to have to "suffer".
P.S. You can run, but you can't hide. You may be faster, but I'm obsessively determined.

That I am aware of. However... Where's the sport in that? Now launching flaming cows.... That is another matter.
EDIT: Flaming cows and calthrops sounds like a genuienly good idea though.
