Well, Helen, it looks like you've been challenged. I'll see how yours turns out before I start on mine. Then I can come to you for advice. Hee, hee. (And I think you know Bob so that you can take a look at his. )

Bob? Who's Bob? Wink Just kidding.....actually I did just talk to Bob and he said that he will be glad to give you guys a pic of Bill's "rather impressive craftsmanship."

Ha! I wish you the best of luck Aaron! Me...I'll just cringe now!!! Laughing Out Loud

Mac, your links were both interesting and informative. Here's a summary of the points I picked up, at least for what I believe I want...

19 inch diameter circle, 1/2 inch thick - made from 2 layers of poplar, laminated 90 degrees, and pinned.

deerskin back (assuming I can find such... not an immediate hit with my usual sources...)

8-9 oz veg-tanned leather for the front

high-domed brass tacks (2-3 sizes, probably, and worth ordering online from somewhere like Matoska if I can figure out the arrangement and design first, and order what I will need, with some langiappe...

dye (which I already have an assortment of)

brass sheet if I decide to put any plates in or decide to make any bosses (bosses would require some additional tooling and a lot more effort...)

3/8 rod if I decide to make a spike, plus some form of something or other to attach it with...

I think I can forego the straw padding / lining, but may put a couple of layers of felt in instead - won't rot or crumble...

any leather tools and stamps that I need, should I decide to do any carving...

Throw all that together with a bundle of hours of spare time, and I think I just might be able to pull something off... Wink
