Hello fellows

New to this board ( and to swords)- but have been lurking some time. You guys seem like a great bunch!

I have resently bought a "Paul Chen Pratical Viking Sword" (I know - I know but I had to start somewhere Big Grin ). It comes with at wooden scabbard - all fine and dandy - but - and here it comes: how to attatch it to a belt and what kind of belt - I would like to center on the Normans ( being Danish as I am) - did they use doublebelts or did they use the wiking "around the neck" hanger?
How did they attach the scabbard to the belt?

I do hope that I will be able to answer any questions you migth have about Danish history in return.

Thanks for any answers in advance!

Kind regards
Morten

I believe the "around the neck" baldrics were used.... I once found a website that I could no longer point you to that says that the Bayeux tapestry shows evidence of the baldrics being worn under the maille-coat and then running out a small slit in the side and attaching to the scabbard. I'm not sure exactly how historically correct this is, but the guy tried it and he said it worked pretty well.

I think there is evidence for the Normans useing both the baldric style and the belt style (not necessairly double-wrapped). As is the standard unspoken disclaimer with all my posts: I could be wrong, though.
There were some threads on attaching the scabbard to a belt a couple weeks ago on this forum. In short, there are a variety of ways. Earlier this week I used a long leather lace to do a rough, not necessairly historical, belt for my Paul Chen Practical knightly sword (I used the pictures in the "knotted sword belt" thread on this forum).

Hi

Thanks for the link - only trouble is that the shop makes it very cumbersome and very expensive to buy from Europe.
Does anyone have links in Europe on frogs and belts?

Kind regards
