Was there ever a French style of armour?
It seems like the English, Germans, Italians, Spaniards, Burgundians all had their own style in which their Armours were made, but I have always wondered if the French had their own style or if they just imported much of their own military personal equipment from the Milanese and Burgundians. Is there any historical sources out there of the subject of a “French Style Armour”? If so I would really to see it please.
During the Middle Ages, Frankish mail was desired all throughout Europe and the Middle East. Charlemagne tried to ban its export.
There is certainly a French style from c. 1500 on, with quite a few pieces surviving. Look for a book from Marina Viallon, coming 'soon'. There were a number of cities that had masters of high quality plate, such as Tours. There are some surviving 15th c. pieces, but they are rare and mostly helmets.
