This is from a MS (http://www.e-codices.unifr.ch/de/list/one/zbz/Ms-Rh-hist0033b) dated 1420-1440. The style of helmet shown here appears twice in it. I'm thinking that might allow a somewhat more precise dating (at least tentatively). What's the earliest other image of a similar helm?
Thanks
Cliff

A quick check on Armour in Art produced this fresco dated 1390-95 from Runkelstein Castle in Italy
In Manuscript miniatures, there are earlier ones but I'm not convinced they aren't great helms. The earliest classic frogmouth seems to be from ONB Cod. Vindobonensis 2762 Wenzel Bible dated 1389.
There are, however, 134 images tagged "frogmouth" so I may have missed something earlier.
Obviously, there are other sources out there, so earlier evidence is quite possible - I've just done a quick search in one source.

I find it very useful. The tagging system is a bit erratic but the date search is very handy.
