Wars of the roses era Rondel dagger
Hello would anyone be able to help me with finding some examples of Rondel daggers that would have been prevalent in England during the wars of the roses time period specifically (1455-1487).
Dear J. Thrun,

Don't forget to look for "roundel" daggers as well. Some institutions, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, use that spelling. But their search results are disappointing for your purposes. You might also try "knife" instead of "dagger"--if you were looking for ballock daggers, this would be a must, but it's less common to call a rondel dagger a "rondel knife".

And be sure to look at contemporary artwork. Manuscript Miniatures, Effigies and Brasses, and Armour in Art, all frequently cited here, are excellent sources, as are art museums' on-line collections and Google Image.

These may also help:

rondel daggers in the Royal Armouries UK collection

rondel daggers and similar daggers in the Higgins Collection at Worcester Art Museum

And there are very likely relevant items in the Albums and Forums here.

Best,

Mark Millman
Dear J. Thun,

There's also a good example, plus two that have no photos, only descriptions, at the Museum of London. And they have a very cool sheath lining for a rondel dagger from your period of interest. (There's an earlier, more complete sheath, too.)

I hope this proves helpful.

Best,

Mark Millman
