British Officer’s Sword with a French “Attack Guard” Style Hilt, c.1790
Rare and unusual Georgian Dragoon officer’s sword c.1785-1797, broad curved single edge blade 30.5” cut with a single broad fuller and etched Knubley No7 Charring Cross (faint), blued and etched with GR, martial trophy and foliate device (blueing mostly worn on one side), cut and polished steel hilt with 3 fixed bars each formed as stylised foliage centred on a facetted ‘button’ and each with a cut and polished dress knot ring, fluted cushion shaped pommel, reeded ivory grip with steel band. Good condition. Note: the hilt is based on the contemporary French folding ‘attack’ guard, which Knubley has chosen to construct with fixed bars. John Knubley, royal sword cutler, was active at this address from 1785 until his death in 1795; his wife continued the business until 1797.
