Anyone have a recommendation on a key book or books covering Continental European basket hilt swords c. 1500s-1700s? A Continental Mazansky, if you will?

I don't think that there is any book that does for Europe what Mazansky did for England.
Your best bet might be to go to the Hermann Historica website and see what old auction catalogs you can browse.
There is an old thread on myArmoury on the subject of European baskets - I'll see if I can find it and post later.
