I've searched, and couldn't find it covered, so sorry if I've missed something.

I can't find evidence for the painted red and striped Anglo Saxon spear shafts that I see often in reenactment. Does anyone have any sources that come to mind? I saw that they've found evidence in earlier sites (300AD), but that was thought to be Roman. Are they extrapolating from there? I trust that it's out there as premier groups are rocking it... but I'm lost.
