I always wanted a Sutton Hoo replica helmet. I don't have the money to get a bespoke one made. The Paul Chen versions are ok but hard to find and also expensive and some look better than others. Then there's the Deepka version which is very funny looking to say the least.

So I decide to buy the deepka version strip it down and use a few bits from it and make the rest myself! I used the pressbleches which surprisingly are quite nicely detailed on this version, these where all re-cut and reused. The crest but this was completely reworked and etched in acid. the neck plate which was also reworked and the dome again this was reworked and heightened. The brass nose was re sculpted, shortened and etched as was the moustache.

Everything else was made by myself including the Dragons, eyebrows, boar heads, cheek plates, face plate, mouth, banding, brass edging, etc etc.

Little did I know the work and time involved to achieve the finished item! It has been by far the hardest thing I have ever attempted to do. But worth it, as I have a unique piece to display.

Bearing in mind I don't have access to a metal workshop or expensive tools. Its was all done with basic tools at home.

Let me be the first to say "WOW!!!" Really impressive work, and an excellent result. Horribly inspirational, too, dammit... (But I want Valsgarde 7 or 8!) Congratulations!

You should put together a more detailed tutorial, describing tools used, redesign decisions you made, lessons learned, more details on the original and final helmets as compared with the original, etc. Very inspirational work, all in all!

Thanks for the comments! I was going to do a tutorial but to be honest it would be so long, it would be a project in its own right. I'm just glad its finished because at various stages I thought its not possible to do this!
