need help authenticating Ames 1849 Rifleman's Knife
Greetings - I'm new to this forum.
I've inherited a small cache of swords, one of which seems to be an authentic Ames 1849 Rifleman's Knife.
I'm 95% convinced it's authentic.

Here are my questions:
Does this look authentic to you experts?
Is eBay the best place to auction it - or should I go with a high-end auction house (I'm guessing they'd watch eBay anyway)
I'm too scared to polish the blade, but should I polish the brass cross guard and scabbard points before selling?

Pictures are below. Any guidance is MOST appreciated!
with thanks,
Brooks

Don't polish or clean anything beyond removing any dirt that may have accumulated. A little oil on the iron parts is OK. Collectors want their items as they are, not clean and shiny.
Welcome aboard.

Sorry but the knife you posted is a reproduction and if sold as old, is a fake.

Of all the Ames rarities, the rifleman's knife is seconded by the Dahlgren bowie bayonets.

Sans owning books, look at other examples and note some pretty basic differences one finds in doing some looking about. Always keep in mind the scarcity and that some have been reproduced for half a century. In a brief look at your three very minimal photos, there are at least six very obvious traits that should show the flags of differences. To me, pointing those out might simply be an invitation to modern makers and forgers but two I'll point out. The marking shown and the scabbard. More include the lack of other traits.

Cheers
