What tool is this?
On Kult of Athena, in the 'new additions' section, they have a Ronin Katana-Two Handed Long Sword #7 for sale. Underneath the ad is a short video of how the sword is made. They use a device, electric-I think, with a long coil on the end that gets glowing hot. They fit this over the tang-end to heat it so it can be peened. What is this tool? Is it a specially made tool JUST for heating tangs? I've never seen this before now. It darn sure works though! Sorry I can't download the video, or I would. Thanks.....McM
Possibly an induction forge, I have not seen the video.

That's impressive! I find that cold peening works fine for most of my applications as long as I have annealed the tang.
Paul guessed it, sight unseen. It's an induction coil.

That would be very helpful in making guards, too.
Thanks for the info, fellas! What other purposes would this be used for...say...commercially or in industry? I know sword making IS an industry, but you know what I mean. The auto industry? Aircraft? Military armor manufacture? :wtf: ....McM
Judging from that tool video, I would guess that it's something you might find in engine mechanics' shops

when i heat a guard with propane, i might as well bring a book
I understand that they are fantastic for small smithing operations but they are also incredibly expensive to operate.
Ha..Yuh...I used to work for the local electric company here where I live. Plug one of those in, and the little spinning wheel in your meter will make it fly off the wall like a helicopter.  ....McM
